We have recently updated our Register of Public Roads Policy. The Policy addresses the unique challenges posed by a mix of public and private roads within the Shire and aims to educate the community about what type of roads are cared for and maintained by the Shire. Some roads fall under the responsibility of the Shire or Department of Transport and Planning (formerly known as VicRoads), while others are privately owned. Many residents are unaware of the intricacies involved in maintaining Peninsula’s many roads and streets, sometimes leading to confusion or frustration.
For a road to be included in our Register of Public roads, it must fulfill these criteria:
- The road must be located on a road reserve that is owned or controlled by the Shire.
- The road is a public highway and the public have a legal right to access the roadway.
- The road is constructed to the Shire’s current standards.
The updated Policy aims to tackle these challenges and enhance public understanding through educating the community about road maintenance responsibility. Information about the roads we maintain is available on our website together with a list of frequently asked questions.
We encourage all home buyers to ask their real estate agent for the Section 32 of the property report to find out who is the responsible road authority before buying. Some roads built by developers are not to Shire standard, so they are not maintained by the Shire. Other roads can be on private property: for example, multi-unit developments with roads that are the responsibility of the owners corporation.
The updated Policy and Protocol are now available for public comment. Let us know if you find the policy easy to understand. Review and provide feedback until consultation closes on 11 December, 5pm.
Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Steve Holland:
“Our community deserves safe and well-maintained roads, whether they are public or private. This Policy clarifies responsibilities and fosters understanding.
“Council encourages residents to review the policy – and importantly, if you’re buying a house, seek information and make sure you know who is responsible for road maintenance before you buy!”
