Neighbour Day 2023: Bayside

Neighbour Day is Australia’s yearly celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with those who live in their neighbourhood and the theme this year ‘Create Belonging’ is all about building communities.

“We can all help eliminate loneliness and isolation. Sometimes all it takes is a simple hello to a neighbour to start a conversation.”

“Bayside provides many opportunities for locals to come together at community centres, parks, local swimming pools, bushcare and community gardens,” Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.

Bayside Council has five bushcare groups that meet once a month. The bushcare groups at Binnamittalong Gardens and Sir Joseph Banks Park meet on the third Saturday every month. Bushcare volunteers can get involved in several activities including weed removal to protect and restore bushland while meeting like-minded people.

There are also five community gardens in Bayside that residents can join. These gardens provide a transformative space where people can socialise, connect with nature, and share with their local community

If arts and crafts is your thing, consider joining one of the several craft groups that meet in our libraries. This includes the Eastgardens Knitting Club, Rock & Wool, Sans Souci Knitting Group, as well as Crafternoon, and library staff will happily provide more details.

Bayside libraries also host programs and events like a regular chess club for adults, adult learning classes and author talks that provide opportunities for social connection.

Council also supports four Senior Centres that offer a range or programs and activities for senior residents.

Young people also have access to Youth Centres and drop-in sessions where they can socialise and take part in a range of activities or engage with other youth service providers.
