Neighbourhood Houses are at the forefront of addressing disadvantage in their local community, with many staff and volunteers working selflessly to support others to achieve positive change.
To ensure that Neighbourhood Houses across the State continue to deliver important services and programs, the Hodgman Liberal Government has funded the Neighbourhood House Security Grants at $150,000 over two years.
I am pleased to announce that the Burnie Community House has received $4,414 for their security project as part of the Round One allocation.
This will involve the installation of a secure permitter fence and gates around the property, as well as gates on the house pizza oven and a safety lock on the disabled toilet.
Tracey Edington-Mackay from the Burnie Community House said, “This work, which is being built by our community, allows us to provide a family friendly space in the Burnie Community House. Parents will be assured that once the gates are closed it becomes a beautiful safe space for children to explore all the hidden gardens.”
A total of 19 Houses were awarded grants for a range of security upgrades as part of Round One, with Round Two set to open later this year.
Neighbourhood Houses operating across Tasmania deliver a range of services to the community including parental support groups, food relief programs, literacy and numeracy support programs, community gardens, lunches and other social events.
The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Neighbourhood Houses, and the $150,000 Security Upgrades Grants is an important part of a total $8.8 million allocated to Neighbourhood Houses in the 2018-19 Budget.
