Warning signs alert visitors to the dangers.
Visitors and residents on K’gari are reminded to never walk alone and carry a stick for protection after a woman was bitten by a wongari (dingo) on K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island).
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is investigating the incident which left a woman with two small abrasions on her right thigh.
On Saturday 26 August 2023, the woman was standing alone on the beach near Happy Valley when she felt a nip on her thigh.
She turned to see a collared wongari, which circled and lunged at the woman, as another collared wongari began to circle her.
The woman yelled and swung her water bottle, and stayed as calm as possible as the drivers of four vehicles came to her aid.
One of the drivers transported the woman to a fenced camping area. Rangers patrolling the area provided Be dingo-safe! information to visitors.
Rangers are closely monitoring the collared wongari.
Visitors and residents on K’gari are reminded to remain vigilant at all times, and children must be kept under constant supervision.
