Today Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman welcomed 10 new recruits to ACT Corrective Services’ (ACTCS) at a graduation ceremony at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).
Minister Gentleman said the new graduates will join the hardworking and dedicated team at the AMC to help reintegrate detainees back into the community.
“ACTCS is an integral part of the criminal justice system.
“This work wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated team who help individuals inside the AMC and in the community. It is important yet challenging work helping detainees reintegrate back into our community,” Minister Gentleman said.
The 12-week custodial training recruits participated in covered everything from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness, women in custody, diversity in custody to mental health training and the lifecycle of a detainee while in contact with ACTCS.
The environment at ACTCS can be challenging, training on peer Support and workplace health and safety is a big focus. Recruits are provided with the skills and knowledge to look after themselves while working in a challenging environment.
This is the second group of recruits joining the workforce at AMC this year bringing the total number to 27 new corrections officers for 2022.
“I would like to congratulate and welcome these new recruits to the team at the AMC who are committed to serving the Canberra community. It is encouraging to see how many new recruits are joining this area of work,” said Minister Gentleman.
