Injured workers and those who have lost loved ones due to a workplace incident will help shape NSW workplace policy and support services through a new advisory group established by the NSW Government.
Minister for Better Regulation, Kevin Anderson said the Family and Injured Worker Support Group will advise SafeWork NSW on the types of support given to those affected by workplace incidents, what services are available and how to access them, ways to improve service delivery, as well as advocating for increased workplace safety in NSW’s communities.
“Workplace injuries and fatalities have catastrophic impacts on the victim’s friends and family, their community and their industry. The group will provide a forum where those impacted by a workplace injury or death can work side-by-side with the Government to better support the health and safety of NSW’s workers,” Mr Anderson said.
“I’ve met with a number of families over the last twelve months and am humbled by their strength and their desire to help others who have been impacted by a workplace incident.”
The group will be headed up by Ambassador, Darren Flanagan, who is known for his critical role in assisting with the rescue mission of two miners trapped more than 900 metres underground during the 2006 Beaconsfield Goldmine collapse.
“While the advisory group will provide advice and make recommendations to SafeWork, the Ambassador will use his wealth of experience to advocate for safer work practices in the community, including through contributing to workplace safety campaigns and messages and being a beacon of support for families at what is the most difficult time in their lives,” Mr Anderson said.
