New Alfrieda Street Civic Plaza project unveiled in central St Albans

Brimbank Council is proud to reveal the newly completed $1.87 million Alfrieda Street Civic Plaza development in the popular St Albans town centre.

said the new multi-use civic plaza is an important community space for the people of St Albans and a win for local residents.

‘Once restrictions ease, residents can look forward to enjoying many community celebrations and cultural events in the new outdoor space.

‘Council has turned the former bus interchange in Alfrieda Street into a vibrant and welcoming space for the community, and a safe gathering space for people to socialise and relax while shopping.

‘The new civic plaza has added to the revitalisation of central St Albans, delivering improved safety, and creating a vibrant setting, with more trees and seating.

‘This impressive space includes new road surfacing and feature paving, improved seating, picnic tables and better lighting, safer pedestrian crossings and signals, as well as vibrant and colourful public art, large shade trees and landscaping to create a cooler environment.

‘Our population is growing fast, and improving these public spaces will enhance community health and wellbeing, and support our community’s recovery through COVID-19.

‘This project supports Council’s goals of creating a liveable and inclusive community, and a space that the people of St Albans will be proud to call their own’, Cr Papafotiou said.

Council has funded the project through the 2019/2020 capital works budget. The project has also received $125,000 from the Level Crossing Removal Authority.

Council has also upgraded the nearby St Albans Square, adding new plantings, paving and painted the raised walls with bright colours that relate to the rich native flora and fauna of surrounding St Albans.
