New and improved McGregor Rd open to traffic

The newly aligned McGregor Rd opens today (July 13 2020), increasing traffic capacity for Smithfield Village and servicing the growing northern suburbs.

The new four-lane, median-divided road will improve safety and connect to the roundabout at Smithfield Village Dr/Dunne Rd.

Cairns Regional Councillor for Division 8, Rhonda Coghlan, said the $4.2m realignment project involved removal of a very tight corner section of McGregor Rd, as well as installation of new street lighting and water mains, footpaths and tree planting.

“The new road will make it easier and safer for drivers and cyclists in Smithfield, especially around the old dog leg section of McGregor Rd,” Cr Coghlan said.

“The new link has formed part of Council’s road network planning for the past 10 years and is part of the Smithfield Village Masterplan.

“It will also cater for the future traffic associated with the Smithfield bypass, which is under construction by the State Government.”

“We appreciate the patience of residents and road-users during these works, which will make travelling safer, faster and easier for everyone visiting, living and working in Smithfield Village.”

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Council has allocated $4.9 million in this year’s Budget, and a further $1 million the following year, to upgrade the next section of McGregor Road from the new road link to the Captain Cook Highway.

“Importantly, the new road link and the project next year will provide four traffic lanes and access to new residential areas of Smithfield Village,” Cr Manning said.

Planned for 2021, the second stage of works includes widening the road, a signalised intersection at Faculty Close intersection, improved drainage, street lighting and landscaping.

The stage two works are expected to be completed before the Smithfield Bypass is opened to traffic in late 2021.
