Planning for rehabilitation of the Latrobe Valley’s brown coal mines has been bolstered with the creation of a new authority dedicated to promoting the effective rehabilitation of coal mine land.
The Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority will oversee the implementation of the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy. It will also inform and consult the community about the strategy’s implementation, monitor its progress and review the rehabilitation plans of mine licensees.
Professor Rae Mackay has been appointed Chairperson of the authority’s board. He is supported by Deputy Chairperson Ms Christine Trotman and board members Mr Ian Nethercote, Mr Ian Gibson, Ms Corinne Unger and Claire Miller.
The new authority will be based at the new Morwell GovHub and will be part of the planned 300-strong workforce occupying the facility after it is completed later this year.
