A new Beaumaris residence took home the top prize and won two other categories in the Bayside Built Environment Awards announced last night.
The prestigious Bayside Built Environment Awards acknowledge and celebrate innovation, excellence and passion in the design of Bayside architecture.
12 Bellaire Court, Beaumaris won the Best of the Best, Don Fulton Award for Excellence in Design after also taking home prizes for Best New Building and Most Creative Design. It was one of two winners in the Best New Building category, sharing the title with 6 Coral Avenue, Beaumaris.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan said that a panel of expert judges had selected the winners and high commendation recipients from among more than 120 nominations this year.
“In honour of the late Donald Fulton, a passionate advocate for exceptional architecture in Bayside, the Best of the Best award was retitled last year to the Best of the Best Don Fulton Award for excellence in Design”..
“The awards are aimed at raising community awareness and understanding of the built environment within Bayside. As the large number of nominations remains strong year after year, it shows how popular and well recognised they have become among our residents and the development industry.”
The judges hailed the entrants’ creativity and innovation, and applauded their environmental and aesthetic sensitivity to our neighbourhood.
Melbourne University Associate Professor in Environmental Design, Masa Noguchi was excited by the unique projects that brought appearance, technology and experience together.
“This can be challenging but many did it so well,” he said. “To design a building is ‘normal’ but to design an ‘experience’ for the users is something really special.”
Amanda Roberts, Director of Urban Design at SJB Urban said she had based her judgements on how the buildings fit within the landscape.
“It is important to look at the built form in collaboration and connection with the street, the wider landscape, see what is going on with neighbouring properties, does the building blend or stand out and if it stands out, how does it make people feel, not just those who live there or use it, but the public walking past – that is all important to ascertain whether the building is doing its job.
“Bayside should be applauded for having these awards and recognising quality outcomes within their municipality. This appreciation will lead to a better urban environment for everyone to enjoy,” Ms Roberts said.
