Rockhampton Regional Council is giving away a free ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Bin Station to promote the importance of getting our waste sorted during ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week 7-13 November.
³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week (NRW) is one of Planet Ark’s flagship campaigns and every year aims to educate and empower people to do the right thing when they’re at the bin.
Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said there are some simple ways to make sure that the right items go in the right bin.
“The days of mixing up waste and sending it all to landfill have long gone,” Cr Latcham said.
“We now know that waste is a valuable resource and the theme for ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week this year says it all – ‘Waste isn’t waste until it’s wasted.’
“The best way to minimise what is going to landfill and ensure that these resources are not wasted, is to get your bins set up right in the home.
“That way, by the time you head out to the wheelie bins, it is already sorted!
“Making sure that our recyclable items are clean and unbagged in the yellow lid bin is the first step, but there are other ways we can reduce contamination of these valuable resources and reduce what is going into landfill.
“Whether it is taking scrunchable soft plastics to Coles or Woolworths for recycling with Red Cycle, or getting the household involved in collecting containers for change, you would be surprised at just how much we can reduce what ends up in the general waste bin.
“And of course – having recently completed the Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) Trial – we have also demonstrated just how much can be diverted from landfill by removing organics from your general waste bin.
“So, the key to separating your waste, so it goes to the right place, is to set your bins up right inside the home.
“Council has colour coded stickers for your inside bins to match what goes into the wheelie bins, available to all households on request.
“Better still – keep up to date with how our community is progressing toward zero waste by signing up to the Rocky Zero Waste E-newsletter during ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Recycling Week and go in the draw to win a fantastic ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Bin Station.”
