New boardwalk in Central Park to improve connectivity across CBD

Construction of a new boardwalk in Central Park is set to begin this month after the tender for the project was awarded in late October.

Townsville City Council has awarded the $2.39 million contract to JMAC Constructions for the design and construction of a boardwalk from Victoria Bridge along the waterfront to Rooney Street (Lowths Bridge).

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project is expected to be completed in time for the opening of the new North Queensland Stadium in February.

“It’s fantastic to see so much development happening in and around the CBD and that we’re about to see Central Park get a facelift in the lead-up to the Stadium opening,” Cr Hill said.

“This project is another piece of the puzzle to revitalise the city and connect all the major precincts, such as Palmer Street and the North Queensland Stadium Precinct together.

“We’re expecting the design and construction of the boardwalk will support up to 20 local jobs and this is a part of our over $400 million infrastructure spend this financial year.”

JMAC Constructions will construct a new boardwalk and improve on the revetment wall along the river.

Council is also planning on installing new CCTV and Wi-Fi as well as refreshing the existing lighting in the surrounding park.

Cr Hill said these works will go a long way to creating a great environment for both residents and visitors traveling around the city.

“What we’re looking for is a way to improve the ambience in the city and encourage families to visit, grab a bite to eat and spend some time together in a beautiful part of the city.

“It’s important that we have a great network of pathways that are adequately lit and provide access to parking, and other attractions.

“That’s why getting this boardwalk finished is a priority over the coming months.”

The decision to award the tender for the boardwalk project was delegated to Council’s Chief Executive Officer in the interests of transparency.
