New Borroloola Sports and Cyclone Shelter

NT Government

The Northern Territory Government is increasing cyclone shelter capacity in remote communities.

The stage two tender for the Sports and Cyclone Shelter in Borroloola has now been awarded to DCT Australia for $8.6 million.

The tender will deliver a dedicated cyclone shelter for the community with construction expected to commence soon, with completion in late 2023.

Prioritisation of the Borroloola cyclone shelter was assessed against a range of exposure and vulnerability factors including population, ability to self-evacuate, road accessibility and likelihood of a tropical cyclone event.

Stage two provides a multipurpose sports court and cyclone shelter, which can hold up to 600 people in the event of a cyclone.

Stage one of the project was completed by Northern Territory company Harvey Developments, which saw the construction of a shade structure over the existing basketball court, providing improved playing conditions for the community.

Quotes from Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government is delivering projects that support local jobs and provide safety for communities right across the Territory.

“Construction of the sports courts and cyclone shelter will improve the liveability of Borroloola, provide safety for hundreds of residents in the event of a cyclone, and drive the economy forward.”

Quotes from Chairperson MRM Community Benefits Trust, Marlene Karkadoo:

“The CBT Board is committed to supporting projects that provide opportunities for young people, as well as increasing the resilience and safety of the community. Improvements to infrastructure and contributing to social and community development are key community identified priorities for the CBT.

“The CBT has long advocated for the development of shaded sports courts in Borroloola to support the sport and recreation needs of young people. The sports court is well used by many local organisations and provides a central location for various activities for young people.

“The addition of the Cyclone Shelter will provide additional opportunities for sport, recreation and other community events and activities.

“We were pleased to initiate this project by providing the seed funding of $1.5 million and are pleased that with support from the Northern Territory Government, these facilities are being delivered.”
