Sunshine locals will benefit from better safety and security with the installation of new CCTV cameras and infrastructure upgrades around main areas thanks to investment from the Allan Labor Government.
Minister for Crime Prevention Anthony Carbines joined Member for Laverton Sarah Connolly and City of Brimbank Mayor Bruce Lancashire today to walk through the new urban design improvements at Bennett Place.
The introduction of the new cameras will serve as an extra set of vigiliant eyes, working around the clock to ensure public safety. By providing real-time monitoring and recording of public spaces, police will be able to respond more effectively in the event of an incident and deter criminal behaviour.
The project has already had a positive impact, with a recent survey showing improvement in the way community members felt about their safety, including at night.
Led by Brimbank City Council with support from the Labor Government, the project has installed 34 CCTV cameras across 21 locations within the northern and southern parts of the Sunshine Town Centre shopping and business areas.
This complements the revitalisation of Bennett Place in 2022, which delivered new seating and tables, landscaping, planter boxes and luminous painted pathways.
The Labor Government provided a $500,000 Community Safety Infrastructure Grant to deliver the project in 2020-21, while Brimbank City Council contributed $20,000. This was one of 31 projects that shared in $5.6 million as part of the program.
As stated by Minister for Crime Prevention Anthony Carbines
“This project will make a real difference to the safety of the Brimbank community, as well as supporting local economic activity.”
“We are proud to invest in initiatives that make the community feel safer for everyone to enjoy.”
As stated by Member for Laverton Sarah Connolly
“We’re creating better community connections by boosting safety infrastructure and ensuring that our public spaces are places that can be enjoyed by everyone.”
