New chapter in Bronte Surf Club and Community Facilities Upgrade

Waverley Council

The Bronte Surf Club and Community Facilities upgrade has reached another milestone with the Council and the Club lodging a development application (DA) for the upgrade.

The Waverley Local Planning Panel will assess and determine the DA and the community will be able to make submissions* through the normal process and via Waverley’s Have Your Say website.

At the May 2022 Council meeting, Council endorsed the Club’s concept design (Option 4) for the upgrade and voted to progress the design to DA development.

Council also voted to increase its funding contribution by $2.9 million to a total contribution of $4 million and negotiated an updated Heads of Agreement to reflect this change.

The surf club building, which is owned by Council, is no longer fit for purpose, and must be rebuilt to include a balance of female to male facilities; family change rooms and accessible amenities, improved lifeguard and lifesaving facilities, and improved facilities for Council’s park workers.

Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, said the Council looks forward to a new, sustainable building that meets the needs of Council, contemporary surf lifesaving and the wider community.

“We acknowledge the hard work the club has put into developing their own concept designs which it presented to stakeholders and the community in April this year for feedback,” Mayor Masselos said.

“The concept design endorsed by Council responds to the feedback we received about the designs initially presented to the community, and we invite the community to provide formal feedback about the DA.”

In the meantime, Council officers will continue to investigate step-free access from the northern section of Bronte Park as a priority action from the Bronte Park Plan of Management.

Bronte Surf Club trains around 200 lifesavers each year and around 800 Nippers and is one of the oldest surf clubs in NSW.
