A new Chief Government Geologist has been appointed to lead Tasmania’s Geological Survey.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said the Government was thrilled to announce Dr Rebecca Sproule had accepted the role of Tasmania’s Chief Government Geologist.
“Dr Rebecca Sproule is a Tasmanian who studied geology at the University of Tasmania, as well as in Victoria before embarking on a successful global career,” Minister Abetz said.
“She has worked for a variety of mining and mineral exploration companies around the world and is currently a Principal Geoscientist for Rio Tinto based in Utah.
“Dr Sproule will bring global expertise to the role through extensive exposure to current industry matters across relevant Australian mineral resource sectors and her work at senior levels in the private sector.”
Dr Sproule takes over from Dr Andrew McNeill who retires this month after more than a decade at Mineral Resources Tasmania.
“On behalf of the Tasmanian Government I thank Andrew for his service to the Tasmanian mining industry and broader community,” Minister Abetz said.
“His extensive career in the mining industry and academia provided a fantastic platform for him to take the reins at Mineral Resources Tasmania as the Chief Government Geologist where he provided so much for the Tasmanian minerals industry and community.
“Likewise, I welcome Rebecca to the role and note that the Geological Survey team that she will lead is vital to support the continued exploration and development of Tasmania’s mineral endowment for the betterment of industry and the community.
“Our valued mining sector is integral to the success of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and I look forward to continuing our important work.”
