Getting across a busy section of Stirling Highway in North Fremantle is now a lot safer thanks to a new pedestrian crossing.
The signalised crossing near the North Fremantle train station was installed by Main Roads with the help of a $100,000 contribution from the City of Fremantle.
It means North Fremantle residents trying to get to Leighton Beach and commuters using the train station and nearby bus stops will no longer have to dodge four lanes of traffic to cross Stirling Highway.
North Ward Councillor Doug Thompson said the addition of the new, safer crossing was a very welcome development.
“It’s been a safety concern for some time and is something my fellow Councillor Bryn Jones and I have been advocating for some years,” Cr Thompson said.
“Colin Barnett when he was the local member for this area was particularly helpful in addressing the issue.
“The council contributed funds for the project, and we thank the council officers and Main Roads for working cooperatively to get the project completed.
“The lights provide a safe and efficient connection both to the station and for access to Leighton, and this will be even better with the new pedestrian railway crossing to be created when the new PSP bike path is extended to North Fremantle in early 2021.”
Other recent infrastructure works carried out in North Fremantle by the City of Fremantle include the repaving and landscaping of the North Fremantle Post Office car park, traffic calming measures along McCabe Street and the repaving of a portion of Thompson Road.
