The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering more efficient and safer roads around the State.
A new signalised pedestrian crossing on Channel Highway will make it easier and safer for Taroona primary and high school students using the bus stops opposite the schools.
The recently completed crossing is the final stage of a $1.5 million upgrade to improve safety for students using the public bus services.
The completion of the crossing follows an upgrade of the city-bound bus stop on the Channel Highway at the start of this year. Improvements included a larger, safer waiting area, two new bus shelters for increased comfort and a design that better caters to passengers with limited mobility.
The existing southbound and northbound cycling lanes have been kept as part of the upgrade works.
The improved facilities support the following expanded bus services on this route which started earlier this year:
* An additional public bus service from Taroona (route 426) in the afternoon which services Taroona High School on the Channel Highway and travels via Sandy Bay Road to Hobart CBD; and
* Re-timetabling the existing public bus service from Hobart CBD to Taroona (route 429) in the morning, which services Taroona High School via Sandy Bay Road to arrive before school start times.
Services to Taroona High School also use higher capacity buses, including articulated buses and the new XDI fleet.
