The interruption to Gloucester’s water supply that was planned for Wednesday 6 October has been rescheduled to Tuesday 12 October.
While the outage will now occur on a new date, it’s still expected that around 550 properties on the southern side of Gloucester could be without water between 9am and 3pm.
The areas impacted include Henderson Street, Hawdon Street, Oak Street, Cemetery Road, Tate Street, Jacks Road and Fairbairns Lane, as well as the roads that connect with them.
MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the interruption had been postponed to ensure adequate notice was given to all affected businesses and residents.
“With an outage of this scale, we want to make sure everyone who will be impacted by it is aware of what’s happening and has time to make alternative arrangements,” said Mr Scott.
“Notices have been hand-delivered to all the properties that will be affected by the outage. We’ve also produced a map showing the impacted area so there’s no confusion as to who will and won’t be without water.”
Mr Scott said a concerted effort would also be made to minimise the duration of the outage.
“We’ll be attempting to switch supply to another reservoir at the start of the outage. If this is successful, water will come back on within 30 minutes with less pressure,” he said.
“Customers should refrain from using washing machines and dishwashers for the day and keep an eye out for any dirty water that may be caused by the changes.”
The interruption will allow important pipework related to the Gloucester water upgrade to be completed.
It is the largest of several interruptions that will be required over the coming months as a part of the $21 million project.
“The Gloucester water upgrade is going to significantly improve the performance of the town’s water network and we really appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is going on,” said Mr Scott.
The project is expected to be completed by September 2022.
