New Devonport Sporting Precinct Game-changer

Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

The first instalment of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s $25 million commitment to the Devonport Oval Sporting and Events Precinct transformation has been delivered.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said it was an exciting day in the history of sport on the North-West Coast.

“Our Government is so proud to be working with the Devonport City Council to deliver this very exciting project, as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future,” Premier Rockliff said.

“Generations of North West Coasters will benefit from this investment which allows basketball to move into a state-of-the-art facility, provides netball with access to indoor courts as well as five outdoor courts, and delivers a function centre and multi-club social and administration facilities that will also be utilised by cycling and athletics.

“Our Government wants to get as many Tasmanians active as possible because we know that physical activity is vital for healthy communities.

“This project has the support of seven sporting codes because it has the power to increase participation across generations, supporting more Tasmanians to get involved in the sport that best suits them.”

The new precinct will enable Devonport to host high-level sporting carnivals, tournaments and other major events.

Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said this project will be a game-changer for participants and the broader community on the North-West Coast.

“Our investment through the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future unlocks the full $60 million development and that’s why we prioritised this project as part of our 100-day commitment.

“We look forward to seeing construction get under way soon.”

The Australian Government has also committed $25 million for the project, with the Devonport City Council committing $4.5 million.

The precinct will include six new indoor courts for netball and basketball, as well as upgrades for cricket and football, bringing Devonport’s sporting community together in a consolidated hub.

It also includes the development of soccer facilities at Valley Road and upgrades to important community facilities at Byard Park.
