New Electric Vehicle Strategy = New Economic and Business Opportunities

The TerritoryLabor Government is continuing to address climate risk and create new economicand business opportunities with the releaseof the Preparing the Northern Territory for Electric Vehicles DiscussionPaper 2019.

Territoriansare invited to have their say on how the Territory Labor Government can bestsupport the uptake of electric vehicles across the Northern Territory.

With renewable energyand electric vehicles, the average NT household could reduce vehicle-runningcosts, making the cost of living cheaper for Territorians. This delivers benefits to Territorians and Territorybusinesses.

The DiscussionPaper showcases the potential opportunities and barriers that need to beconsidered in the development of electric vehicle policy and infrastructure.

It focuses onbattery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which arelikely to represent the most significant changes in Australias vehicle fleetin the short and medium term.

The Paper alsohighlights passenger and light commercial vehicles, as these are the mostlikely to be the area with the greatest growth in the near future, and whereGovernment involvement will be the most relevant.

The TerritoryLabor Government is continuing to address climate change while creating newbusiness and economic opportunities for Territorians.

There is anincreasing global trend of consumers who choose to purchase electric vehiclesover standard combustion engine vehicles, and our Government wants tounderstand from Territorians how we can support an increase in electric vehicleuptake.

The creationof an electric vehicle policy will support our Governments actions onaddressing climate risk to transition to a low-carbon economy. Responding toclimate change will not only help us protect our environment, but will supportthis new industry and the jobs that come with it.
