New Energy Infrastructure Commissioner Appointed

The Australian government has appointed Tony Mahar as the new Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner (AEIC).

In his role, Mr Mahar will lead efforts to promote community engagement practices in the renewable energy transformation.

Mr Mahar will stand down from the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers Federation, where he has served as CEO for 8 years, to take up this appointment which has an initial term of 3 years.

From his extensive experience in rural and regional Australia, Mr Mahar brings a strong understanding of the priorities and needs of Australia’s regions.

He will work to promote leading community engagement practices with:

  • farming and regional communities
  • industry
  • government.

The AEIC is responsible for:

  • dispute resolution and engagement with local communities, including First Nations communities, about proposed or operating energy projects
  • providing transparent information about the planning and operation of major energy projects and the renewable energy transition
  • identifying and promoting best practices related to the planning, development and operation of energy projects.
