New facility for Fremantle penholders under construction

  • Construction of penholder facility at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour underway
  • $2.9 million project on schedule for completion next August
  • Continues work to improve and better connect the southern precinct of the harbour

Construction work has commenced on new facilities for penholders and the public in the southern precinct of Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour marking early progress in the implementation of the future vision for the iconic facility.

In June, a $2.9 million design and construction contract was awarded to WA-based and owned company Schlager Group Pty Ltd for the first dedicated penholder facility at the harbour. It features bathrooms, kitchen andlaundry facilities, a dedicated covered barbeque area and accessible toilets – including two that will be available to the public.

The work, due for completion in August next year, will also see the creation of storage spaces and an area for trolleys and bins, new fencing and CCTV improvements to boost safety.

The facility is being built in the southern precinct of the harbour after the completion last year of a $6.1 million project to extend services at the southern land-backed wharf along Capo D’Orlando Drive and reclaim land for the building. The project also delivered improved connections to the southern part of the harbour with a new pedestrian path, extended services, lighting upgrades and landscaping to improve public access and increase safety for users and visitors.

The new penholder facility, reclamation and improved connections add to the State Government’s investment at the harbour following the $4.6 million replacement of the nearby Jetty 3 last year, and are being delivered along with the now contracted $7.8 million electrical upgrade at the harbour.

As stated by Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael:

“The construction of this new facility, together with the earlier improvements connecting the southern precinct of the harbour, are important steps forward in making the 40-year vision for the Fremantle harbours a reality – as outlined in the Fremantle Harbours Master Plan launched last year.

“The recent design work for the new penholder facility has seen changes to improve durability and sustainability, including the use of stainless steel roof sheeting.

“For efficiency, a tilt-up construction method is being applied where walls are precast, and then lifted into their final position with a crane.

“The facility will provide greater convenience for users, adding to the harbour’s appeal as an attractive place to pen a vessel, given its proximity to Rottnest Island.

“The work will also improve toilet facilities for the general community in the southern precinct of the harbour, which is now better connected with improved access for pedestrians flowing from the earlier works.”

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

“This is another example of the Cook Government’s ongoing commitment to improving the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour for locals and visitors alike.

“I look forward to announcing further improvements as we build on our 40-year vision for the area, as outlined in the Fremantle Harbours Master Plan.”
