- $9.8 million state-of-the-art sports hall opens at Melville Senior High School
- 2021 election commitment provides new gym, fitness centre and STEM classrooms
- Part of WA Labor Government’s record $4.8 billion education infrastructure program
The Cook Labor Government has delivered a new sports hall and STEM classrooms at Melville Senior High School.
The $9.8 million state-of-the-art facility includes a purpose-built sports hall with a full-sized gymnasium, a strength and cardio-focused fitness centre, changeroom and toilet facilities, and two STEM classrooms with access to a planning room.
The sports hall can open out onto the oval and existing hardcourts, providing a dynamic space that supports the school’s growing number of students. A sprung timber floor playing surface provides a training ground for the school’s specialist netball program, as well as basketball, volleyball and badminton.
Construction began in September 2023, and the completed building showcases an external artwork that represents the energy and movement of the human body.
Melville Senior High School is recognised as a top performing school in health and physical education studies. The southern suburbs school has achieved 12 Subject Exhibition Awards and Certificates of Excellence over the past nine years, including seven awards for the top performing health studies students in the State.
The school is also among the top five schools in School Sport WA’s McMahon Shield, which is awarded to schools based on a combination of participation and performance in interschool sport.
The project was a 2021 election commitment and part of the WA Labor Government’s record $4.8 billion education infrastructure program.
