South West Rocks residents and holidaymakers had reason to celebrate on Thursday 19 December with the opening of the new Back Creek Footbridge.
The new $1.3 million superstructure replaces the old wooden bridge which closed in early 2019 due to safety concerns.
Located slightly downstream, the new bridge has a similar design, allowing pedestrian access to the northern side of the estuary and water vessels to traverse from the estuary mouth to the boat ramp.
Predominately made of composite materials, the bridge is safer, will require less maintenance and has a longer lifespan. The construction of a new amenities block and footpaths near the entrance to the bridge are expected to be completed in time for Christmas.
Kempsey Shire Mayor, Liz Campbell, said the opening was perfect timing for the busy Christmas holidays.
“Back Creek is a beautiful area for residents and holidaymakers to enjoy all year round and as the footbridge has been closed for almost a year, the opening of the new bridge will be welcomed by many,” she said.
“The replacement has been a large project requiring significant planning and environmental investigation with construction also dependent on the tides. I am thrilled we have been able to provide a safer and modern bridge for the community.”
Cr Campbell recognised and thanked Council staff and contractors for their contributions and hard work.
The amenities project has been jointly funded through the NSW Government under the Stronger Country Communities Fund.
The old bridge will remain in place before being demolished in February.
