Work on a new footpath on Tincogan Street, Mullumbimby, starts on Monday 15 May; the second part of a project to improve pedestrian safety.
The footpath will be constructed on the southern side of the street, between Stuart Street and Dalley Street and connect directly to the pedestrian crossing that was installed late last year.
Currently there is no formal path on this stretch of TIncogan Street, and pedestrians are often negotiating parked cars and other obstructions.
Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said the installation of the pedestrian crossing and the new footpath is a response to calls from the community for a safe, accessible way to cross Tincogan Street.
“In December last year Council changed the flow of traffic in Tincogan Street and built the pedestrian crossing, after meetings with the Mullumbimby Residents Association and community members,” Mayor Lyon said.
“Feedback was that people, especially those with young children, the elderly and those with vision impairment or low vision, found it difficult crossing TIncogan Street, which is a busy thoroughfare,” he said.
The project also includes:
- Landscaped garden beds.
- Installation of rumble grids at the intersection of Tincogan Street and Stuart Street to keep turning traffic clear of the footpath.
- Lighting for the pedestrian crossing.
Council staff are notifying businesses and residents in the area about the construction of the new footpath on Tincogan Street.
The speed limit along Tincogan Street will also change from 50km/h to 40km/h.
The Tincogan Street works are funded by the NSW Government.
