New healing garden to bring families together during drug and alcohol recovery

Karralika drug and alcohol facility in Fadden has opened a safe and interactive space for residents undertaking rehabilitation to spend time with their children and loved ones.

Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja said the new garden features sensory spaces, play equipment, an interactive bike track, a hand-ball court and a barbeque area.

“With funding from the Commonwealth Government’s Community Health and Hospitals Program alongside a generous $60,000 donation from Riverview Developments, this therapeutic healing garden enhances the already highly valued service Karralika provides.”

ACT Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said helping families stay connected through the rehabilitation process is an important part of reducing the negative health, social and economic consequences of drug and alcohol dependence.

“The ACT Government is committed to supporting people to recover from drug and alcohol dependence so they can get back to their lives, families and communities,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.

“Words cannot truly express the gratitude that we feel when we look at around this outdoor space, and the smiles and laughter we see and hear from the children and their families at the Karralika Family Program.

“We thank the Commonwealth and ACT governments for investing in the upgrade of this site, making the space a truly family friendly place for residents to call home, while they participate in our program.

“This is a great example of what can be achieved through a public-private partnership with shared values, helping make a difference for those we seek to support.”
