The iconic Jelly Babies, which stood outside of CoCa (now Bulmba-Ja) for over a decade, will be relocated to Munro Martin Parklands.
The five fibreglass Jelly Babies, designed by local artist Sophie Cadman in 2004, were removed from the front of the Bulmba-Ja building as part of a State Government upgrade to the facility.
Through discussions with Arts Queensland, the artist has indicated a preference for the public artworks to be relocated to Munro Martin Parklands, which ensures high visibility, provides safety and security, and remains respectful to the artistic intent of the artwork to celebrate the cultural diversity of the community.
Council considered a number of sites to relocate the Jelly Babies, including near the Fun Ship at the northern end of the Esplanade, near the Cenotaph and adjacent to Muddies.
However, it was noted that placement of the artwork close to children’s recreational and play facilities could inadvertently indicate that these are a funky interactive play feature.
Arts Queensland has committed to reimburse Council for any expenses incurred for relocation and will formally transfer the asset to Council once the site has been approved.
The installation of the figures will be conducted as part of the current renovation works at MMP.
