The Australian Government is investing $70 million in the Pilbara Hydrogen Hub.
Hydrogen hubs are locations where producers, users and exporters of hydrogen work side by side to share infrastructure and expertise. They will help the hydrogen industry springboard to scale.
The Pilbara Hydrogen Hub will be a major centre for clean hydrogen production and export. It has the potential to become an international gateway to Australian-made green steel and iron.
In its early stages, the Hub will prioritise common-user infrastructure. These are the things that are necessary to get hydrogen stored and transported and exported. This will include a hydrogen or ammonia pipeline, and upgrades to port infrastructure to support renewable hydrogen production.
The planned pipeline will enable production capacity of around 492,000 tonnes per year. That’s enough to power 26,000 heavy vehicles for an entire year.
The Hub will create over 1,000 new jobs in construction and operation. Another element of the Hub project is the development of the Clean Energy Training and Research Institute. This facility will help local workers get the opportunity to upskill and transition into these new roles. This will ensure the emerging hydrogen industry has the skilled workforce it needs to grow and succeed.
This project will take place on the traditional lands of the Ngarluma and Kariyarra people. This also includes Murujuga, where the traditional custodians are represented by Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation.
The Australian and WA Governments are working with the traditional custodians of the Pilbara region to build a hydrogen hub that creates economic opportunities for First Nations communities for generations to come.
Construction of the Pilbara Hydrogen Hub will start in 2024. It is expected to be delivered by 2028.
