The Albanese Government is today announcing a further six initiatives as part of the largest commitment to justice reinvestment ever delivered by the Commonwealth.
The national justice reinvestment program is a long-term, community-led approach to preventing crime, improving community safety and reducing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contact with the justice system.
As part of the First Nations justice package the Albanese Government has committed $79 million to support up to 30 community-led justice reinvestment initiatives in First Nations communities across Australia.
The announcement today includes the first justice reinvestment initiative in Victoria.
Following a rigorous assessment process by an independent panel the following community-led justice reinvestment initiative have been selected:
- Kurdiji Aboriginal Corporation, Lajamanu, NT
- Healthy Dreaming Pty Ltd, Port Augusta, SA
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation Family Prevention and Legal Service – Djirra, Melton, VIC
- Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation, Mossman, QLD
- Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council, Napranum, QLD
- Aboriginal Male’s Healing Centre Strong Spirit Strong Families, Newman, WA.
The six community-led initiatives announced today takes the total number of justice reinvestment initiatives now being funded to 26.
