New land supply dashboard supports improved housing supply and affordability

SA Gov

The Malinauskas Labor Government is delivering on a key election commitment, launching the Land Supply Dashboard today.

The public resource will provide detailed information about land availability, housing supply and urban development patterns across Greater Adelaide.

The Land Supply Dashboard will be the only interactive visual platform of its type in the country.

The Land Supply Dashboard aims to achieve a shared understanding of community, consumer and industry needs, ultimately leading to greater transparency, improved housing supply and affordability over time.

Currently focussing on the Greater Adelaide planning region, the dashboard incorporates existing land supply data and the latest land division and development application data.

The live and interactive tool displays current information on the availability of infrastructure such as water, sewer, and electricity to development ready lots.

It also features the latest up to date information on code amendments.

The user-friendly online platform is freely available, meaning the public will now be able to track development patterns and activity across Adelaide.

By the end of this year, it will be expanded to include more detailed development activity data across all towns and cities in South Australia, as well as other land supply types such as additional residential and employment land activities.

The Land Supply Dashboard will support Planning and Land Use Services’ Regional Planning Program and set the vision and strategic direction for South Australia’s seven planning regions for the next 15-30 years.

Information available through the dashboard will also support the new Housing Infrastructure Planning and Development Unit to ensure land releases are closely monitored, and the state grows and develops in a sustainable way with appropriate infrastructure in place.

The Urban Development Institute of Australia identified the dashboard as a crucial tool and called for its development as part of their grow.reform.build proposal.

The dashboard is part of the South Australian Government’s Better Housing Future plan and complements the government’s commitment to release additional land for residential development.

Through the creation of this dashboard, the State Government is providing an improved understanding of the amount and location of land available for housing construction.

As put by Nick Champion

The Land Supply Dashboard provides timely and transparent data on urban land supply and development activity in the Adelaide area.

By monitoring and analysing urban development patterns and activity, the South Australian Government will be better equipped to identify areas of high demand and develop strategies to meet those needs.

We promised to deliver a tool which would provide accurate, real-time information regarding the state of land supply across South Australia.

This will contribute to a more sustainable and balanced housing market across the state.

As put by Liam Golding, Chief Executive Urban Development Institute of Australia – SA

The Urban Development Institute called for a Land Supply Dashboard in our grow.reform.build advocacy agenda because we need real time information about a critical driver of housing affordability.

We are pleased the Government has acted on this recommendation because in the current housing affordability crisis we need every tool available to respond to demand in the market.

The path out of our housing affordability crisis is supply. The Land Supply Dashboard will be used by industry and Government to deeply interrogate where there are constraints on development and the actions we can take, like delivering infrastructure, so we can up supply and build more houses.
