Leading Canberra-based systems integrator A23 is appointing Natalie Legg as CEO in a recalibration of its leadership team to drive growth and expansion.
The previous CEO, Simon Metcalfe will step into a new role of Chief Growth Officer, and the pair will implement a strategy for innovation and growth.
A23 began as a start up by 11 friends and colleagues seven years ago, including Natalie and Simon. It has already grown to employ nearly 60 staff, with revenues at nearly $30 million a year and several major Federal Government clients. The company is now targeting another 75% growth over the next three years.
Simon said he was delighted that someone with Natalie’s capabilities and commitment to A23 was succeeding him as CEO, and her perspectives as an indigenous woman were a significant asset to the company. “Having a First Nations woman move into this role really represents something for the company, it’s about advancing opportunities.
“This is an industry dominated by men, especially in senior leadership, that should change, and this reflects that. It is a chance to lead by example,” he said.
“Natalie is a strong leader and contributed to getting this company to where it is today, she is going to be laser focused on growth, operationally and culturally.”
Natalie, an entrepreneur who also established and owns a café and a bar in Canberra, said she was relishing the new challenge.
“At a macro level I want us to grow, to grow beyond Canberra with more private sector clients. At a cultural level, I want to lead a company with clear communications and positive culture. And I hope we can continue to be an employer of choice, championing diversity with more women and diverse cultural backgrounds.”
“We are aiming for 25% year on year growth over the next three years. With Simon in his new role we want to expand further into Sydney and Brisbane; do more work outside of Government and expand our offerings. There is still plenty to do in Canberra though, we’re only just getting started.”
A23 chair Dean Taylor said the moves meant Natalie and Simon could both “focus on their areas of passion.
“Natalie and Simon have both invested so much in the company and are committed to its success,” said Dean.” The transition is a positive refresh that ensures continuity, while turbocharging growth. It is a win-win.”
Simon’s decision to step back from being CEO was prompted by travelling overseas this year on his first extended break in 15 years, when he realised he was ready for a change, and what the company needed to do for continued growth.
“We recognise that to grow further we need a focused sales engine to drive our goals over the next three years. I’m looking forward to working with the team to build and drive this.”
Natalie, a proud Kamilaroi woman from North Western NSW, has called Canberra home for nearly 20 years.
