New look Mount Lockyer Primary School unveiled

  • Design images of the new Mount Lockyer Primary School have been released
  • $15.2 million rebuild will replace original buildings and provide additional facilities for growing student population
  • Preparation works have begun, with the new school expected to be ready for the 2022 school year
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today unveiled design images of the brand new Mount Lockyer Primary School in Albany.

The school, which was built in 1954, will receive a much-needed $15.2 million redevelopment as announced by the Premier in October last year.

Today the community received its first look at the new school, which will be built on the existing oval and provide a modern learning environment for students.

The redevelopment includes general and specialist classrooms, a new administration building, an undercover assembly area, a redeveloped oval and play areas and a car park. A cluster of old classrooms will also be refurbished.

Preparation works are underway and are scheduled to be completed in January 2021. The main works, set to begin in November this year, will be completed in stages to ensure school operations and students learning is not disrupted during construction.

The new school is set to be ready for the start of the 2022 school year, and will have permanent capacity for up to 648 students and space to increase this to 700 if required.

A team of Year 5 students will record the progress of the school build to capture the historical change as it transitions from old to new.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“It is fantastic to see how this 65-year-old school will be transformed into a modern learning environment for this thriving community.

“The McGowan Government made a commitment in 2017 to upgrade the school, but instead decided to replace the school’s buildings which were old and dated.”

Comments attributed for Albany MLA Peter Watson:

“It is important for local staff and students to access high-quality education facilities, and I’m thrilled to be here today to share in this announcement.

“Mount Lockyer Primary School has served the Albany community well for more than 60 years and this redevelopment will ensure it continues to do so in future.”
