Will Hodgman,Premier
Today, I announce the new majority Liberal Government Ministry, to continue the job of maintaining the momentum in our State, and investing for growth.
Mark Shelton will be appointed to Cabinet as the Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, and Minister for Local Government.
Mark is an experienced Member of Parliament who has served as Speaker, and was previously the Mayor of the Meander Valley Council. He has also been the Shadow Minister for Police, and will continue delivering our strong Plan to keep our communities safe.
In addition to my responsibilities to our important Tourism, Hospitality and Events and Trade sectors, I will continue to lead the Government’s strong commitment to the Prevention of Family Violence, and will take on the Advanced Manufacturing and Defence Industries portfolio.
Deputy Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, will lead our strong focus on Mental Health and Wellbeing, a top priority for my Government. Jeremy will continue his important work in Education and Training, and also takes on Sport and Recreation.
Peter Gutwein, as Treasurer, continues the work of managing our State’s finances well, and now takes on the important portfolios of Environment, Parks and Heritage.
Elise Archer continues with the very important role as Tasmania’s Attorney-General, as well as Minister for Justice, Corrections, the Arts and Racing. Elise will also now take on responsibility for our booming Building and Construction sector.
Having taken responsibility for one of the biggest jobs in government, the health portfolio, Michael Ferguson now has another massive job to do as the new Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Minister for State Growth.
Michael has, without doubt, been an outstanding health minister. In the face of an unprecedented increase in demand for health services, and a system that was left in disarray by the Labor-Green Government, he has over the past five years delivered more than 1,000 additional health staff, opened 130 hospital beds, secured the future of the Mersey Community Hospital, and commenced redevelopments of each of our State’s major hospitals, including commencing the major redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital.
My Government will deliver a record investment in the job creating infrastructure our growing State leads, and Michael will now lead that work in addition to being the Minister for Small Business, and Minister for Science and Technology. He will also continue to serve as the Government’s Leader in the House of Assembly.
Sarah Courtney will become the Minister for Health and provide new leadership in this priority area for our Government. We understand that there is a lot more to do, and Sarah is the right person to take on this job. Sarah will also be the Minister for Women.
Guy Barnett will continue to deliver our important Energy agenda, and drive the growth in Primary Industries and Water. He will also take on Resources, and continue his passionate service to Veterans Affairs.
Roger Jaensch will continue his important work as Minister for Human Services and Community Development with responsibility for Housing, Planning and Aboriginal Affairs. Roger is passionately committed to improving services for people most in need in our community.
Tasmania has come a long way in the past five years, but we know there is much more to do.
My Government remains firmly committed to delivering our plan that ensures every Tasmanian shares in a growing and prosperous State.
