The ACT Government has today released a new 10-year plan to enhance and protect the environmental and recreational values of Canberra Nature Park reserves.
Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said the new Canberra Nature Park Reserve Management Plan was important because of the integral role nature reserves play in our city’s environment and outdoor lifestyle.
Canberra’s connection to green spaces sets us apart from many other cities in the world, and this new plan will ensure we protect the many nature reserves in our bush capital,” Minister Gentleman said.
“We have worked closely with the Canberra community to develop a management plan that protects our iconic nature spaces, while providing the community with plenty of recreational opportunities close to home,” he said.
“The plan includes nine new nature reserves and environmental offset areas to provide further protection for our critically endangered box gum woodland and native grassland ecosystems and the threatened plants and animals that rely on them.
“We engaged with Ngunnawal Traditional Custodians to develop the plan so that natural and cultural heritage is conserved for future generations. Traditional Custodians will also be involved in the ongoing management of Canberra Nature Park.
“Canberrans love our nature reserves, and Canberra Nature Park is popular for its extensive nature-based recreational opportunities across 39 reserves. Recreational facilities and visitor programs will be enhanced to encourage the community to take part in nature-based experiences.
New codes of practices for dog walking, horse riding and bike riding are included in the plan to ensure these activities are kept to designated tracks and trails, minimising the impacts on the native flora and fauna.
“I would like to thank the groups and members of our community who provided input into the new Canberra Nature Park Reserve Management Plan as we continue to conserve and enhance Canberra’s rich natural and cultural values,” Minister Gentleman said.
