The government shouldn’t be waiting a week to implement mandatory testing for essential workers coming into Tasmania.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said while stronger testing measures were welcome, they don’t go far enough.
“I’m pleased Peter Gutwein has finally recognised the importance of testing all essential workers arriving in Tasmania but I don’t understand why we need to wait a week before those measures are introduced,” Ms White said.
“We have essential workers coming in to Tasmania right now who have been granted exemptions from testing, some from Victoria, and all should be tested immediately on arrival to ensure the safety of our community.
“The decision to open up travel bubbles between South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia is good news for families and Tasmania’s struggling tourism and hospital sector.
“With 17 per cent of Tasmania’s workforce relying on the tourism sector, today’s announcement brings some hope to those businesses that have been struggling to survive day by day and keep their workers in jobs.
“The government now needs to ensure its processes and procedures are 100 per cent right to maintain safety in Tasmania.
