Plans for the creation of a new world-class marina development at Ocean Reef are on track, after the Marmion Marine Park Reserves Bill 2019 successfully passed through both houses of Parliament.
The passing of the Bill by the Parliament marks a significant milestone for the long-awaited Ocean Reef Marina development, and has the iconic project on track to commence construction next year.
The Bill confirms the boundaries of the marina.
It follows the development’s marine-side environmental approval, received in August after a Public Environmental Review – the highest level of environmental assessment in the State – identified strict conditions that will ensure the environment is protected.
Construction of the Marina is expected to commence in 2020 and will provide more than 900 local jobs during development and ongoing operation.
On completion, Ocean Reef Marina will become a vibrant destination for tourists and locals alike – creating a new hub for commercial, recreational and residential activity on the coast and delivering capacity for 565 boat pens, 200 boat stackers and a diverse mix of more than 1,000 new homes.
The development will also include some 12,000 square metres of retail and commercial space, 2.6ha of high-quality public open space and an internal beach, catering for a range of new and expanded businesses such as waterfront cafes and restaurants.
The McGowan Government has committed $120 million in funding for the Marina over the life of the project, beginning with a $35 million allocation over the next four years. Further funding is expected to be raised through private sector investment.
As stated by Lands Minister Ben Wyatt:
“The passing of the Marmion Marine Park Reserves Bill through both houses of Parliament is a critical step for this long-awaited project.

“More than 900 local jobs will be brought to the area during construction and ongoing operations of the Ocean Reef Marina, creating a thriving new destination for tourism, hospitality and coastal living.”
As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:

“The passing of this Bill is a significant milestone for this highly anticipated development.
“The Marina development has been subject to a rigorous environmental assessment process which is testament to the commitment by the State Government to ensuring we are able to deliver a development that balances environmental impacts with economic sustainability.
“I look forward to seeing this long-awaited development take shape in the coming years.”
As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
“The Ocean Reef Marina will become a world-class waterfront precinct that will include recreational, tourism and residential facilities, drawing visitors from near and far.
“The marina will promote tourism, showcase our gorgeous coastline and will become one of Perth’s hot spot locations.
“It will deliver local jobs and create new opportunities for local businesses, and establish a world-class tourism and recreational destination for locals and visitors alike on our coast.”
