Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today announced the new Shire of Carnarvon Local Planning Scheme has been given final approval.
Replacing two outdated schemes which date back more than 25 years, the new scheme provides a local planning framework reflecting the State Government’s modernisation of the planning system.
The scheme enables and encourages Carnarvon to maximise economic opportunities, particularly in tourism and horticulture.
Protecting areas of the Gascoyne rich in food production will enable the Shire to build upon its successful horticultural industry and grow employment opportunities in the region.
The scheme will also play an important role in protecting significant natural assets such as the Ningaloo Coast and Shark Bay World Heritage Areas, encouraging local tourism.
Under the new scheme, Coral Bay will remain one of our State’s premier tourism destinations and will continue to serve as a base for visitors to the Ningaloo Coast.
The scheme also recognises Coral Bay may need additional services in the future to address growing tourism demands. Consistent with previous State strategic planning documents for the region, the McGowan Government has identified additional land for future community facilities, holiday accommodation and workforce accommodation
As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:
“The new Carnarvon Planning Scheme strikes the right balance between maintaining the Shire’s local character and planning for growing needs in a changing world.
“Carnarvon is a major regional centre in the Gascoyne and we want to continue to encourage economic growth particularly through tourism and agriculture.
“The new scheme aligns with other key strategies such as the Coral Bay Settlement Structure Plan, enabling greater flexibility to provide for additional community facilities, holiday and workforce accommodation, should they be required in the future.”
