New music plan rocks city

Mayor Tom Tate has tonight launched the City’s Music Action Plan 2019-2021 aimed at establishing the Gold Coast’s reputation for making a national and global contribution to the industry.

Helping home-grown acts hone their craft, attracting established music businesses to the Gold Coast and supporting local music venues to thrive are at the core of the plan which was endorsed by Council late last year.

Launching the plan in Southport, home to a number of live music venues, the Mayor said that live music was the lifeblood of a cosmopolitan economy and essential to any destination serious about showcasing its culture and identity.

“From the venues of the hinterland to the bars along the beaches, the Gold Coast is home to a uniquely diverse music scene and we want everyone to experience great music,” he said.

“Best of all, it invests in the future of Gold Coast musicians and music industry professionals so it will be aspiring locals who will have the first opportunity to upskill, grow their business skills, and promote what they do” Mayor Tate said.

He said that while the music industry needed to be self-sustaining, now was the time for the City to exercise leadership through investment and support.

“Our investment will create jobs and contribute to the economic impact of the sector across the Gold Coast.”

“We want to see promoters, educators, artists and venues singing from the same song sheet so we can best build our reputation as a music city.

The projects announced today prioritise working in partnership with peak bodies and local organisations and businesses to further build business and creative skills.

These include: professional and creative development opportunities, grants programs and promoting our music industry nationally.

These projects complement the other MAP priorities that are buzzing away behind the scenes to better profile the city as a great place to present live music; and to build the brand of our local talent and the music industry nationally.
