- Renaming honours sacrifices of Indian ANZACs
- Request initiated by Consulate General of India and supported by State Government following endorsement from the City of Perth
Nelson Avenue in East Perth has been renamed Sailani Avenue to commemorate the contribution of Indian ANZAC Private Nain Singh Sailani and acknowledge the sacrifices of Western Australia’s Indian ANZACs.
The renaming is being announced to coincide with the Indian Prime Minister visiting Australia today.
Lands Minister John Carey, along with representatives from the City of Perth, and the Consul General of India today marked this significant naming event.
Private Sailani arrived in Geraldton from India in 1895 and worked as a labourer before enlisting with the Australian Imperial Forces during World War One as one of 12 known Indian ANZACs.
He was one of two Indian ANZACs to be killed in action in France on 1 June 1917 as part of the Belgium campaign. Private Sailani received the British War Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914/15 Star in recognition of his contribution and also has a dedicated honour plaque at King’s Park.
As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:
“It is important for place names, including street names, to connect people to place, culture and our environment.
“The renaming of Nelson Avenue, East Perth, to Sailani Avenue ensures Western Australia continues to honour the memory of our ANZAC soldiers and the sacrifices they made for their country, while also acknowledging the vital role of all of our Indian ANZACs.
“Western Australia has a strong relationship with India, and a large Indian community and our Government’s re-naming of Nelson Avenue to Sailani Avenue demonstrates commitment to our ongoing relationship with India, highlighting international connections are a key part of WA’s rich multicultural history.”
