New partnership to deliver more secure housing for women in Tasmania

Australian Treasury

The Albanese Labor Government’s $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator will help transform the lives of more Tasmanians with the development of 38 new homes in Hobart for women over 55 who are at risk of homelessness.

The $16.7 million project includes $13.36 million from the Albanese Labor Government’s Social Housing Accelerator.

The development will be delivered by the St Vincent de Paul Society and national community housing provider Amelie Housing, with oversight from ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Tasmania.

The site currently hosts a St Vincent de Paul charity shop and emergency relief centre, as well as a warehouse.

The retail shop and relief centre will be relocated during the works, so service can continue and will remain open to Tasmanians.

Work is expected to begin in February 2024 and be completed by December 2025.

The homes will be delivered as part of the Albanese Labor Government’s $50 million Social Housing Accelerator funding for Tasmania, which will deliver more than 110 new social homes.

This is another example of the Albanese Labor Government working with the Tasmanian Government to build more homes.

This includes a minimum of 1,200 homes for Tasmania through Housing Australia.

The delivery of projects under the Social Housing Accelerator builds on the new $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund and agreement by ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Cabinet to deliver the most significant housing reforms in a generation.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing, Julie Collins MP:

“This new project goes to the heart of our Government’s commitment to ensure more Australians have a safe and affordable place to call home.

The women who will move into these homes in Hobart are in critical need of a safe home, which is why the announcement we are making today is so important.

Across the country, the $2 billion Social Housing Accelerator is delivering around 4,000 homes, and it’s just one way we’re supporting Australians facing housing challenges.

Our ambitious housing reform agenda is working across the board – more help for homebuyers, more help for renters and more help for Australians needing a safe place for the night.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for Tasmania, Carol Brown:

“Having a home is life changing. It’s great to see Tasmanian women being able to make that dream a reality.

This project not only addresses our housing challenges but also demonstrates our commitment to supporting vulnerable women in Tasmania and across the country.

The Albanese Government will continue our efforts to make sure more people in Tasmania have access to an affordable home.”
