New playground for Carrington Park

Last Friday, the new playspace at Carrington Park, Knoxfield was officially opened by Mayor Cr Susan Laukens and Dr Tien Kieu, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region. The celebration was attended by representatives from the Department of Land, Water and Planning, Yellowstone Landscaping, Knox City Council CEO, Bruce Dobson, members of the Open Space team and local residents.

A very special Acknowledgment of Country was performed by Nathan, a local primary school student. Nathan is a Wadiwadi and Wembawemba boy who currently lives in Scoresby.

The new playspace was built with the support of the state government and includes the following new play equipment and elements:

  • A new triple swing set with basket seat
  • A climbing carousel
  • A huge 9m high play tower includes three separate slides at different heights. – It has stairs all the way up, making it exciting for older children and the adventurous younger ones. At the top of the tower, kids will be able to peak through the railing to view 360 around Knoxfield and even spot their house!
  • A locally manufactured rock climbing unit, the first of its kind installed in Knox. This unit is both challenging and engaging for groups of primary ages through to adults. It supports the development of upper body strength and problem-solving.
  • A large picnic shelter and picnic seating beneath and around. – its location makes it possible for families to gather in the centre of the activity while still being able to keep an eye on children wherever they choose to play.
  • Park furniture – picnic table, platform bench & seats
  • New concrete access paths
  • Nature play elements – tree logs, rocks and concrete steppers
  • Soft landscape aesthetics with feature garden bed

As part of the project, we also engaged all of the students at Carrington Primary School to make clay tiles as part of their art class’s works. The pavers have been installed on the concrete steppers in feature garden beds around the playground. The inbuilt tiles have become a unique feature at Carrington Park, bonding with the community and creating special memory for the school children.

So, if you’re looking for a new playspace to explore, we recommend you try this one!
