The ACT Government has today lodged the development application plans and designed for the new public primary school in Throsby – Canberra’s 90th public school.
The ACT Government is committed to making sure that every child has a place at a great local public school. The number of Canberra public school students continues to grow by about 3 per cent each year, with significant growth in the Gungahlin region.
The $43.9 million new public primary school in Throsby will open in 2022 and will cater for 450 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and up to 132 preschool students, with extra space for future student growth.
The new school in Throsby will be another zero emissions school. The ACT is leading the nation in climate action and school infrastructure is one way that the government can make a big difference towards reducing carbon emissions on behalf of the Canberra community.
The school will include high quality learning environments, incorporating both indoor and outdoor learning areas, as well as integrated spaces to support students with specialised needs.
The school will provide additional community facilities for the area and will include a large community room and kitchenette, multipurpose double gym, sports courts and change-room facilities, outdoor turf sports field and outdoor multipurpose hardcourts for everyone to enjoy.
This public primary school in Throsby is another example of the ACT Government investing in education and the infrastructure our city needs as it continues to grow towards a population of 500,000 by 2030.
Across Gungahlin, the ACT Government is also:
- Increasing the permanent capacity at Franklin School (previously named Franklin Early Childhood School) to 600 students across Kindergarten to year 6 by the 2022 school year.
- Increasing the permanent capacity of the Gold Creek School Senior Campus by 200 extra places by the beginning of the 2022 school year.
- Upgrading facilities at Gungahlin College to accommodate more staff and specialist science facilities.
- Undergoing plans for a new school in Kenny to cater for 800 students from Years 7 to 10 with room for temporary expansion to accommodate more places if required.
