The Queensland Police Service’s recruitment program continues apace with the latest cohort of recruits graduating from the Oxley Academy today.
The graduation ceremony comes just a matter of days before another cohort of more than 100 recruits enters the Oxley Police Academy to begin their comprehensive training course.
The Queensland Police Service currently has a pipeline of more than 1,200 applicants being assessed and the expectation is that approximately 600 recruits will go through Queensland’s Police Academies between now and the end of the year.
Police Minister Mark Ryan today joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll and Assistant Commissioner Mark Kelly to welcome 38 new First Year Constables (FYC) into the Service.
Four police dogs were also inducted into the QPS at the ceremony.
This ceremony is a significant milestone in the lives of the new officers, which acknowledges their dedication and accomplishments.
The event also symbolised their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the community.
Throughout their training, the recruits of intake six have already gained real world experience and have come from a variety of different prior career backgrounds such as youth work, airport operations, defence, and teaching.
The 38 new FYCs will spend the next 12 months rotating through allocated stations, providing them with the opportunity to gain experience in a broad range of policing duties.
In addition to the new officers, four Police Dogs Ebony (Labrador), Gypsy (Labrador), Lily (Dutch Shepherd) and Stryker (Belgian Shepherd) also graduated from the Firearm and Explosive Detection Dog 14-week initial training course today.
During the course, they were trained to detect a variety of odours including commercial, military, and home-made explosives, and firearm related odours.
All four will now be deployed state-wide with their police partners and perform duties attached to the Explosive Ordnance Response Team including security searches and bomb threats.
QPS Open Days will be held in Brisbane and Townsville on Saturday, July 15 to showcase the many career opportunities available in policing.
