Hobsons Bay City Council is leading the way in sustainable solutions for the community as it prepares to roll out Recycling 2.0, an innovative waste and recycling service.
The Recycling 2.0 service, starting on 1 February 2020, will maximise the recovery and local reuse of recycled kerbside materials, as well as increase collections from the current 104 to 116 per year.
The new service will separate food organics, reducing the volume of waste Hobsons Bay residents send to landfill by at least 20 per cent (approximately 8,000 tonnes per year).
With four bins per household, glass will also be taken out of the commingled yellow bin. Without shards of broken glass in the paper, cardboard, metals and plastic bin, much better recycling outcomes can be achieved for all the comingled recycling products, including glass.
Throughout January, all households in Hobsons Bay will receive:
- a food and garden waste bin with a light green lid, if you don’t already have one (collected weekly)
- a kitchen caddy for food waste
- a glass recycling bin with a purple lid (collected every four weeks)
Existing recycling bins with yellow lids will continue to be collected fortnightly and general rubbish bins with a dark green lid (or red lid), will change to a fortnightly collection.
As per current arrangements, Council will continue to make extra bins available at an affordable fee, for households that request them.
Changes to the service follow the recent SKM recycling crisis, which accelerated plans outlined in Council’s Waste and Litter Strategy 2025 to find a local, sustainable solution.
Council has forged strong partnerships with local suppliers who are equally committed to a more sustainable Hobsons Bay, including processors Australian Paper Recovery, Veolia and Alex Fraser, as well as Cleanaway for collections. Council and O-I Glass have also signed an MOU signalling our plans to work together in future, which will be another great local outcome.
Also helping lead the change are over 350 Recycling Champions who have volunteered to spread the word about the new program and help Hobsons Bay residents embrace the new service.
Block parties and a new app to help make recycling easy and fun are also in the pipeline for later this summer. Options for multi-unit dwellings are currently being assessed with arrangements to be confirmed soon.
