A 65 metre section of the riverbank at the Port of Echuca will soon be better protected against erosion with the construction of a new retaining wall.
Infrastructure Services General Manager, Jason Deller said the wall will be installed at the site of the existing pop up park, north of the wharf.
“The new wall will provide a stable site for future development and protect it from the erosion caused by the rising and falling of the Murray River,” Mr Deller said.
“The Port of Echuca is an important asset for our region and these works are vital to ensure the site is preserved for future generations.”
“Whilst the wall will be mainly constructed of concrete and steel, it will be cladded with a timber facia to maintain the historic appearance of the port. This will only be visible from the river side as the wall will finish at ground level.”
“The existing pop up park site will be fenced off during construction, however it will be restored to its current state once the project is complete.”
The port and wharf will remain open throughout the project with all scheduled events to continue.
Measures will be put in place to minimise the construction dust and noise.
The project will cost approximately $500,000, with the tender for the works planned to go out in February.
Subject to the tendering process, construction is expected to start in April and take approximately three months to complete.
