New Scholarship For Outstanding University Graduates

  • Western Australian Government John Monash Scholarship for an outstanding university graduate
  • New scholarship will allow university graduates to undertake postgraduate studies at one of the best overseas programs
  • Investment of $5 million from the State Government

Outstanding university graduates will be able to undertake postgraduate studies overseas as part of a new scholarship for Western Australians.

Education Minister Dr Tony Buti today announced the Western Australian Government John Monash Scholarship, which will enable at least one outstanding graduate of a Western Australian university, each year, to undertake postgraduate studies at one of the best overseas programs in their academic or research specialisation.

Recipients will receive a contribution of $80,000 towards tuition and living expenses per year of study, up to a maximum of $240,000 for three years of study, in addition to travel support.

This scholarship will be granted to recipients whose field of study will benefit Western Australia, and the State’s goals for community resilience, equity and sustainability into the future.

Successful scholars must be graduates of a Western Australian university. The Government is keen to advance applicants who have either attended a Western Australian public school, were first in the family to attend university, come from a low socio-economic background, are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person or come from a culturally and linguistically diverse background or live with a disability.

The John Monash Scholarship for postgraduate study overseas is awarded in the spirit of General Sir John Monash, who believed that education is not given for individual benefit, but for the higher duties of citizens who seek to advance society.

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“I am very pleased to announce the Cook Government will fund a perpetual scholarship of $5 million.

“It is through forward-thinking collaborations like these that Western Australia can make considerable progress towards solving challenges that we have a real duty to face, in the way that the late General Sir John Monash did throughout his life, whether in the military, academic leadership, business, or in public service.

“I very much look forward to learning of the future achievements of the Scholars.”

As stated by the Chief Executive Officer of the General Sir John Monash Foundation, Mr Paul Ramadge:

“Western Australian scholars will be thanking the Cook Government of 2024 for many, many years to come.

“This announcement of a perpetual scholarship helps position Western Australia at the forefront of the knowledge economy and nation-building.

“We are deeply grateful for the Government’s outstanding vision.”
