New toilets will be built in Alistair Knox Park in Eltham featuring the Shire’s first Changing Places accessible toilet and change room.
The $915,000 project, funded through the Victorian Government and Council, will also include a further two accessible toilets and four standard cubicle toilets.
Concept designs for the new toilets and change facility are now available to view and provide feedback at until 17 September.
facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets with extra features and more space to meet the needs of people with high support needs. They include a height-adjustable, adult-sized change table, electronic hoists, accessible toilet and a shower.
Mayor Ben Ramcharan said Council was committed to ensuring Nillumbik’s places and spaces were accessible and inclusive for everyone.
“We want to create more opportunities for people with disability to participate in everyday community life with their family and friends, and this one important way we can do this,” he said.
“Alistair Knox Park is a popular place to visit in the Shire and close to important services including the Eltham Library and the shopping centre.”
The toilets will be located in a more visible area of the park, closer to the playground, making it easy for families to access and nearer to the library and cafes. The existing toilet block, which is near Main Road, will be demolished.
There will be new accessible car parking in Panther Place and an accessible path from the road to the facility and other features of Alistair Knox Park.
Construction is anticipated to start later this year with completion in April 2024.
The project has been supported by Victorian Government’s Universal Design and Changing Places funding.
