Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC) will commence major work at the intersection of Horton and Gordon Street next month to facilitate smoother traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety.
Eire Constructions will begin removal of the roundabout in late August, to prepare for the installation of new traffic lights and additional travel lanes.
The upgrades will see both east and westbound lanes along Gordon Street – on approach to the new lights – increased from two to three, while the same will be delivered for southbound travel on Horton Street.
Pedestrian safety will also be improved with signalised crossings. A new shared path on the southern side of Gordon Street will also be built to link the existing footpaths together at the entry of the Historic Cemetery.
PMHC Group Manager Project Delivery, Chris Favaloro, said the overall aim of the upgrade is to provide a safer and more efficient intersection for all transport users.
“The Gordon and Horton Street intersection provides a critical link to the Port Macquarie CBD, with more than 20,000 vehicles travelling through it each day,” he said.
“The installation of new traffic and pedestrian signals, as well as the addition of dedicated turning lanes on approach to the intersection, will create a safer a more efficient transport environment for all road users.”
Mr Favaloro said while it is intended that the intersection will remain open and operating during works, road users can expect some minor delays and detours.
Access to nearby businesses will remain available during construction, however there will be the loss of some car parking along Gordon and Horton Streets due to the widening of the lanes.
