- New state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Services Centre opens at the Port of Dampier
- The integrated centre will expand marine infrastructure and operational capacity across the West Pilbara
- 172.6 million tonnes of total annual throughput at Port of Dampier in 2023-24
The new integrated Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Centre at the Port of Dampier was officially opened today, marking a major step forward in enhancing port operations and driving future growth in the Pilbara region.
Operated by Pilbara Ports, the Dampier VTS Centre oversees commercial shipping for the West Pilbara, including the ports of Dampier, Ashburton and Varanus Island. Now equipped with cutting-edge technology, the VTS Centre will support the region’s long-term expansion, including the development of greenfield ports.
The Dampier VTS coordinated more than 4,280 safe vessel visits across the ports of Dampier, Ashburton and Varanus Island in the 2023-24 financial year.
The Dampier VTS uses advanced sensors, radar and metocean equipment to control vessel movements, monitor sea state, and ensure navigational safety.
In addition to supporting maritime activity, the VTS Centre plays a critical role in emergency response efforts across the West Pilbara region, working alongside emergency services to assist with marine search and rescue efforts.
Comments attributed to Ports Minister David Michael:
“As a geographically isolated State, our economy is highly dependent on high-capacity and efficient ports.
“The new VTS Centre, alongside continued State Government investment in the Dampier Cargo Wharf projects, will expand marine infrastructure and operational capacity at the Port of Dampier.
“It is fantastic to see Pilbara Ports continuing to meet industry’s growing export needs, as strong economic conditions across the Pilbara increase demand for port services.”
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
“I am proud to celebrate the relocation of the Dampier VTS Centre to its newly refurbished home. After a decade of dedicated service, this move marks a significant step forward in the delivery of marine services in the West Pilbara.
“By improving the amenity of the Port of Dampier to match other global ports, we are positioning our region as a competitive player on the international stage.”
